The work of Carry Doorn explores the relationship between material, movement, and light. Working with finely woven metal mesh, she transforms an industrial material into delicate, seemingly weightless sculptures. Through folding, shaping, and layering, the rigid qualities of metal give way to fluid forms that evoke the softness and movement of textile.
Light plays an essential role in her work. As it passes through the transparent layers of mesh, colours overlap, shadows emerge, and the sculpture continuously changes in appearance. Each fold creates new densities and tonal variations, allowing the work to shift with its surroundings and the position of the viewer. Her background in fashion and design is reflected in this sensitivity to material, volume, draping, and movement.
Balancing strength and fragility, structure and transparency, Doorn creates sculptural forms that appear both physical and ephemeral. The metal mesh becomes a means of drawing in space — capturing light, movement, and colour in forms that seem to unfold beyond their material boundaries.
