Rogan Brown (1966), based in UK
Rogan Brown graduated with a BA and MA in English Literature and Cultural Theory from the University of London before fully dedicating himself to a career as a visual artist.
His work sits at the intersection of art, science, and craft. Through layered visual references—ranging from microbiology, geology, and anatomy to cells, microbes, fossils, insects, cloud formations, and human anatomical structures—he develops refined paper sculptures that translate the natural world into intricate, imagined forms. Brown’s works are executed with exceptional precision through meticulous hand-cutting with a scalpel and laser cutting, in a highly labour-intensive process that demands considerable time, focus, and craftsmanship.
The resulting fragile paper sculptures translate microscopic life into meditative visual structures. They explore the boundary between self and environment through the poetic lens of science.
Rogan Brown received the Best Installation Award (UK National Open Art Competition, 2013), was named Emerging Artist of the Year in 2014, and won first prize in the Sculpture–Installation category of the Florence–Shanghai Prize. His work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, China, and the United States, and was included in the exhibition Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses, which travelled to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris), the Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane), the ArtScience Museum (Singapore), Kunsthal Rotterdam (Rotterdam), and the Brooklyn Museum (New York).
